Car Rental

You may wish to rent a vehicle. Driving is complex in Mexico. Please read the lower half of the driving section for guides and travel information - starting with Road Regulations and Signs:

  • Many find renting a vehicle in Mexico to be difficult at times and more expensive than planned. Parking can be a challenge, so take this into consideration vs. shuttles, taxis/Uber, and public transportation. The smaller the car, the easier it is to park, plus these vehicles have better fuel mileage. Gas station guide.

  • International drivers license is not required.

  • In Mexico every rental car location is an independent franchise vs. corporate owned in other countries. You will see low online prices. Then you will often be required to buy additional insurance once you arrive.

  • AVIS, Sixt and Hertz include 3rd party liability insurance in their listed online price. 3rd party liability insurance is the minimum required to drive on Mexican roads. 3rd party liability insurance covers injury and damage to other people and their cars or property.

  • CDW - collision damage waiver insurance covers the cost to repair your vehicle. This is not required by law to drive a rental, but will be required by most rental car companies.

  • Rental companies will often not honor your travel credit card insurance benefits (CDW - collision damage waiver). The 3 companies above have honored these card benefits, but remember every location is an independent franchise & rules.

  • If you do not have a travel credit card with international CDW benefits, then you will need add this additional insurance cost to the rental. Sometimes you can leave a very large deposit instead instead of CDW insurance.

  • Rental agencies require a refundable deposit on your credit card or cash.

  • Expect to pay $50+ a day minimum for basic cars, no matter what you read online. If you see a very low price per day, guaranteed this does not include 3rd party insurance liability, nor CDW insurance. They will up-sell you these packages at the counter desk.

  • Booking.com & EconomyBookings have a wide range of rentals or you may book directly with each company.

  • When picking up and dropping off your vehicle, video and take pictures of the whole vehicle. Inspect underneath and confirm a spare tire is present.

  • Most all car rentals are not allowed to leave Mexico. Read your paperwork carefully. Hertz has been reported to allow this.
